How Long Is a Skills Assessment Valid in Australia?

Engineers Australia and ACS skills assessments are normally valid for three years. What happens when yours expires mid-EOI, and how to plan your timeline around it.

Quick answer

Skills Assessment Validity: the short answer

An Engineers Australia or ACS skills assessment is normally valid for three years from its date of issue, unless the assessment letter states a shorter period. Your assessment must be valid at the time you lodge your visa application — not merely when you submit your Expression of Interest.

The three-year rule

Both Engineers Australia and the ACS issue outcomes that are normally valid for three years. The letter itself states the validity — read it, because a small number of outcomes carry a shorter period.

The Department of Home Affairs requires a valid skills assessment at the time of visa application. Some visa subclasses also require it at invitation. What it does not require is validity for the whole processing period — once lodged with a valid assessment, expiry during processing does not undo the application.

The EOI trap

Here is where applicants get caught. You lodge your EOI in month two of your three-year window, with a competitive but not leading points score. Invitation rounds pass. In month thirty-four your assessment expires and your EOI is now unsupported — you cannot accept an invitation without paying for a fresh assessment.

Two defences. First, raise your points so the wait is shorter: our points calculator shows which lever moves your score fastest. Second, watch the calendar and start a re-assessment at around the thirty-month mark if an invitation has not arrived.

Reapplying after expiry

There is no renewal. An expired assessment is reassessed as a new application, with a new fee. The good news is that your existing CDR is normally reusable — Engineers Australia is assessing the same qualification and experience. What changes is that you should update the CPD list and CV with the intervening years, and consider whether additional employment now supports a stronger relevant skilled employment claim.

Verify before you act

Migration rules, occupation lists, fees and processing times change. This guide was last reviewed on 2 August 2026. Always confirm current requirements with Engineers Australia, the ACS or the Department of Home Affairs before lodging anything, and seek advice from a registered migration agent (MARA) for immigration matters.

Frequently asked questions

How long is an Engineers Australia skills assessment valid?

Three years from the date of issue, unless the outcome letter specifies a shorter period. It must be valid at the time you lodge your visa application.

Does my skills assessment need to be valid when the visa is granted?

No. It must be valid at the time of lodgement. If it expires while the Department is processing an application that was validly lodged, that does not invalidate the application.

Can I extend or renew an expired skills assessment?

No. There is no extension mechanism. You submit a new application and pay the fee again, though you can normally reuse your existing CDR with an updated CPD list and CV.

Is the ACS skills assessment validity different?

No — the ACS also issues outcomes valid for two years in some cases and three in others depending on the assessment type. Check the validity stated on your own result letter rather than assuming.

Not sure your CDR is ready to submit?

Send it to us. A qualified engineer in your discipline reviews it against the MSA booklet and the Stage 1 competencies, runs a plagiarism scan, and tells you plainly what to fix — before you pay a non-refundable assessment fee.
